CW: When did you first start singing?
AR:I have been singing for as long as I can remember. From what I’ve been told, I started singing at around the age of 2 years, and was already scratching Stevie Wonder records on the record player and singing “I Just Called To Say I Love You” at age 3.
CW:Who else in your family sings?
AR:I have a number of relatives who sing and in particular, my dad sings and played the bass and guitar in bands from a young age.
CW: Who were your musical inspirations?
AR:I have many musical inspirations. Growing up, especially in my teens, I was very influenced by RnB/Pop groups and vocalists such as Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson. Subsequent to that, I have also been tremendously inspired by artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Ricky Martin, Andrea Bocelli, Selena Gomez, Christina Aguilera, Bon Jovi and Josh Groban.
CW:You write all your own music – where do you draw inspiration from when you write your songs and what’s your favourite part about the process?
AR:I often draw inspiration from a number of sources, including the beach (water, sand, sea air), nature overall, relationships that I’ve been in and my Christian faith. I love the entire song composition and recording process but in particular, allowing the emotions and/or environment of an experience to feed through me and begin to produce the melody and chords of a particular song while I’m sitting at the piano or keyboard.
CW:What other talents do you have?
AR:I dance, play the piano, write poetry and I also love running and playing tennis.
CW:What’s next for you?
AR:I am really excited about the year ahead! I’ve recently been composing music for a new, original musical theatre production called “Magdalene: A WANTON SAINT”, in which I’ll be playing the role of Jesus later this year and for which I am co-composer and co-musical director. I’m also looking forward to singing and playing the piano at various venues around Melbourne and to continue building my recently established Singing and Acting/Theatre school, Antonio Rullez Academy of Performing Arts.
